Homeopathy is a very unique healing art that stimulates the body's core vitality to rid itself of illness and promote wellness. It is a holistic system of medicine which is safe, gentle and profoundly effective. The remedies, made of natural substances, encourage the body to heal rather than merely suppress symptoms.
Homeopathy has ancient origins. The theory that "like can be treated with like" can be traced back as far as Hippocrates (468-377 BC). But it wasn't until the work of a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), that the theory developed into a usable practice.
Homeopathy is a system of therapeutics based on the Law of Similars. It comes from Greek homoeo (meaning similar) and pathos (meaning suffering). The principle is that a substance that produces a set of symptoms in a healthy person, has the ability to cure a sick person who is exhibiting those same symptoms.
In conventional medicine many times the treatment plan is based on the symptoms, finding and diagnosis of a particular illness. Disease is thought of as individual ailments attacking the body in various ways and forms and the treatment is fighting back those individual ailments without any consideration to what else is going on with the patient. Homeopathy considers a patient's whole being, not individual ailments. It takes into account not only the physical symptoms, but also the mental and emotional state of the patient. In homeopathic therapy, the treatment plan is individualized to the patient with the intent of discovering and removing the underlying causation. The goal is not to merely remove the symptoms, but to remove the deeper disturbance that results in symptoms.
The philosophy of homeopathy holds that mind, body and emotions are not separate. The idea that we are treating a unique individual and not only a disease or a symptom is key to understanding classical homeopathy.
